Car Camping 101: How to Pack Your Car for the Perfect Weekend Escape

Car Camping 101: How to Pack Your Car for the Perfect Weekend Escape

You don't need a mountain expedition to enjoy the outdoors. A car, a campsite and a free weekend are enough. Car camping is the easiest way to get into camping: no heavy backpack, no tough hikes, just a boot full of gear and a view you didn't have on Friday.

The trick is packing smart. Here's how to prepare your car and your camp setup so the trip feels relaxed from the first mile.

At Top Sale Mall, our Outdoor Camping and Car Accessories collections cover both sides of the journey. Let's get packing.

Step 1: Plan the Trip

Pick the right spot. Choose a campsite that suits your experience, and check the rules, bookings and facilities before you go.

Check the forecast. Pack for the weather you might get, not just the weather you hope for.

Tell someone your plan. Share your route and return time with a friend or family member.

Check your car. Tires, fuel, oil, lights and fluids. Look at your owner's manual and get any issues sorted before you leave.

Step 2: The Camp Essentials

Shelter. A tent suited to the season and number of people, with all poles and pegs. Practice setting it up at home first.

Sleep system. A sleeping bag appropriate for the temperature, plus a mat or pad for comfort and insulation.

Light. A torch or headlamp for each person, with spare batteries. Lanterns make camp feel cozy.

Cooking and eating. A camping stove, appropriate fuel, cookware, utensils, plates, cups and a cooler if you need to keep food cold.

Water. Bring plenty of drinking water, and check whether your campsite has a supply.

Clothing. Layers, rain gear and warm socks. Nights can be colder than expected.

First aid kit. Plasters, antiseptic, pain relief and any personal medication.

Tools. A multi-tool, a mallet for pegs, rope and a small repair kit.

Step 3: Make Your Car Work for You

Organize the boot. Use storage boxes or organizers so gear stays contained and easy to find. Heavier items go low and secure.

Keep the cabin tidy. A seat-back organizer or console tray keeps snacks, maps and chargers within reach.

Protect your interior. Floor mats and seat covers help with mud, sand and spills.

Sun protection. A sunshade helps keep the car cooler when parked. Check it fits your windscreen.

Secure everything. Loose items can be dangerous in a sudden stop. Never block your view or stack items above the seat backs.

Don't overpack. Leave room for people, and check your car's load limits in the manual.

Step 4: Power and Gadgets

Keep your phone charged. A power bank and a car charger make life easier. Use the right cables and chargers for your devices.

Navigation. Download maps for offline use, as signal can be patchy in remote areas.

Lighting. Rechargeable lanterns and headlamps save on batteries. Check how they're charged before you go.

Safe charging. Don't leave charging devices unattended, and keep them away from heat and damp.

Know the travel rules. Power banks and some batteries have restrictions on flights and some transport. Check before you travel.

Step 5: Camp Safely

Fire safety. Follow campsite rules on fires and stoves. Never leave a fire or stove unattended, keep it well away from tents and vehicles and fully extinguish it before you leave or sleep.

Never use stoves, grills or heaters inside a tent or closed vehicle. They can produce carbon monoxide, which is deadly.

Don't run the engine in an enclosed space. Keep ventilation in mind if you're sleeping in or near your car.

Keep food secure. Store it properly to avoid attracting wildlife, following local guidance.

Look after your pets and kids. Keep them supervised, and never leave them in a parked car.

Leave no trace. Pack out all rubbish and leave the site as you found it.

Step 6: A Simple Packing Checklist

Step 7: Enjoy It

Arrive in daylight. Setting up is easier and safer before dark.

Keep it simple. The best trips aren't the most complicated ones.

Be flexible. Weather changes and plans shift. Roll with it.

Take it in. Put the phone down and look around.
